Glory Years Sports Bar & Grill, 347 S. Washington St.,
Green Bay | Rock quartet Big Time is living up to
its name: Winning a recent band competition; playing at Summerfest;
and getting ready to head into the studio to record its first
CD.
Q. Big Time won the Battle of the Bands
competition at Gallagher's Off Broadway this summer. How did that
work and what kind of experience was that?
Aaron Vorass, lead vocalist: Over six weeks,
you went head-to-head with different bands, so we actually played
three times. That was pretty interesting. It was a really good
experience for us. It was an opportunity to see the other bands out
there and see how we measure up. There's some really outstanding
talent in this area.
Q.
When you were playing up there, did it feel
competitive?
A. Absolutely not. We did not even approach
it that way. When you're talking about music or any art form, I
think competition really has no place. We were really just doing our
thing. We didn't walk away from it thinking, "We're the greatest
band." We walked away from it thinking, "Boy, there's a lot of good
entertainment out there."
Q.
How was the experience of playing at Summerfest?
A. It was awesome. To play for that many
people as a part of Summerfest, which is really a part of music
history; I don't think it gets much bigger than that as far as music
festivals go.
Q.
Big Time is taking itself out of the bar music scene for a
while?
A. Right. We're going to take a little bit of
a hiatus and work on a CD that we've been promising for the last
year and a half.
Q.
Do you see the band playing more originals after the
CD?
A. Absolutely. At most of the clubs we're
playing, we're playing for four hours. If we were opening for a
national act, it'd be easy for us to play all originals for 45
minutes or an hour. Not that we don't have four hours of original
material, but it's really hard to get booked here doing
that.
Q.
What's going to be on the CD?
A. It's
stuff that we've been playing out live for the last year and a half,
two years. We've really procrastinated on the CD. Jim (Pleshek,
guitar and vocals), who does most of the writing, is a bit of a
perfectionist, and he really wanted to make sure that our best
material is on this CD.
Q.
How long are you going to be working on the record?
A. We're looking at probably getting it done
in two weeks.
Q.
Earlier you spoke highly of the Green Bay music scene. What
makes it so good?
A. I think there is actually a music scene
there, and that's more than I can say for a lot of places. Crowds
have been great. The clubs ... have stuck to it, established a
reputation for bringing in good bands.
Q.
What CD is in your car or home stereo right now?
A. Fuel, "Something Like Human."
Q.
What's your take on 'N Sync?
A. I think there's probably a place for that.
It could never work for us because I just can't dance. But to each
their own.
